#AMMCONNECT: OF BLOOD AND ROSES

HEY THERE! Thanks for dropping by. I am KD Campbell (though Katie is fine!) and I go by @KatieCWrites on twitter!

First off, a little about me…

I am 29 years old and live just outside Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. I’ve been doing this writing thing for about five years now, but before that I would write and read unhealthy amounts of HP fanfic (Dramione <3) to the point I would get yelled at to go outside. I love fantasy/science fiction and I am always down to snuggle up on the couch with a good romcom. Other interests I have include anime (I’m still in love with Ichigo Kurosaki with the long hair and Syaoran Li) Star Wars (diehard Reylo right here) and I visit Disneyland nearly annually with my partner as we both love a good fairytale (or in my case, the villains).

Enough about me, you’re really here because you want to hear about the story I’m submitting.

MY STORY

OF BLOOD AND ROSES is a upper YA fantasy that combines the gilded world of Claire Legrand’s FURYBORN with the dark character arc in Julie C. Dao’s FOREST OF A THOUSAND LANTERNS.

PITCH: Eighteen-year-old Princess Ophelia Rosiers of Rosailles has known her whole life she is to marry a prince–and not just any prince, Prince Jourdon: the heir to the crown of Rosailles’s most hated enemy, Garnette. With her marriage, the final terms of a peace treaty between the nations will be complete, and a new era of peace can begin. But Ophelia isn’t just any princess, she is the Rose Heir–the inheritor to an power gifted to her ancestor long ago by the Angels that has since been locked away, leaving her with nothing more than their whispers to guide her.

Only when Ophelia meets Jourdon for the first time, he isn’t who she expected, and all her hopes and dreams are dashed as she realizes she is now more alone than ever in a palace surrounded by her enemies. The only person she can turn to is her mysterious handmaid, but she has secrets of her own. Instead Ophelia seeks a distraction, and Prince Pierre, Jourdon’s younger lush and wicked brother, is more than happy to oblige her. Ophelia turns her back on the strict rules that have always guided her actions, finding herself lost in the delights of wine and Pierre’s dangerous eyes. But distractions can only last for so long.

When betrayal strikes, and the fragile peace between Rosailles and Garnette shatters for good, Ophelia will do anything she can to avenge those she loves–and her own broken heart, even if it means awakening a dark and deadly power that no human should ever possess.

WHY AM I ENTERING AMM?

This story, in particular, has been difficult. It is a villain origin story, and though I have been revising it for nearly a year now, I still feel like it has a lot of work to be done. When it comes to revision my first impulse is to throw everything out the window and start over, which can work! But I would also like to learn how to build and expand on what I have to craft a well rounded story that really brings Ophelia’s journey to life. Ideally, my mentor would challenge me and push me to find the heart of this story and isn’t afraid to flirt with the darker sides to human nature. If it does mean a page 0 rewrite, I’m ready to put in the work!

Aside from that, I also see how much love and support there is within the AMM community, and I hope I can share a little bit of that too! Writing can be a lonely, daunting task. The more friends I can make that understand that, the better!
